Help 12 hours for Greece : Autumn is bringing its part of solidarity needs
The staff off the European Commission Representation in Athens in collaboration with the Representation in Brussels and 12 Hours for Greece, a Brussels-based charity organisation, are raising funds for the victims of the wildfires of 23 July, in Mati, Greece, which killed 95 persons.
Several colleagues on holiday around Mati witnessed the disaster and went on the spot since the first moment in order to help the victims. Local needs are still being assessed by daily contacts directly on location by our staff in Greece and Brussels, as a month after the tragedy, hundreds of families are still wondering how they are going to rebuild their lives.
12 Hours for Greece is a non-profit organisation created in 2012 to help associations operating in Greece in the areas of education, health and the fight against poverty. The association is not linked to any organisation or political party. Their main action is an initiative called “Fuel for Schools”, where they purchase fuel to heat schools in Northern Greece. Last year, they were able to heat 40 schools, representing between 6.000 and 7.000 children.
Up to now, they have received over 40.000 € from Colleagues in just a few weeks, which are helping to meet concrete needs of organisations and individual families affected by the dramatic fires.

A total of 10 families have already been helped and are very grateful for this act of generosity coming from Brussels. More of them could be helped tomorrow, thanks to you…
New needs are coming in every day. All beneficiaries have included pictures of their devastated houses.
The objectives of the action are to be able to act quickly and to focus help on the concrete needs of institutions and families who have lost everything. In order to identify the beneficiaries, 12 Hours for Greece is working with associations and people living directly in Mati, Neos Voutzas and Rafina.
The Central Staff Committee wishes to support this spontaneous initiative by colleagues of the EU institutions. The actions will continue throughout the winter.
A big charity concert will be organised on 10 November 2018 at La Salle de la Madeleine in Brussels, with Alkistis Protopsalti as guest star. The concert will be devoted to raising money for the people in need and to define new actions for the winter.
